Social media websites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have become the go-to places for firms to check out the backgrounds of prospective employees. But social media is increasingly used in insurance fraud investigations too.
Social media is a way of linking people, so insurance companies, police and investigators such as The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) are turning to social media sites in the hope they can link suspects to crimes to use as evidence to support a case.
It’s not just networking sites that are used to investigate fraud. Chat from internet forums can be used and a great deal of information can be found with just an email address. But Google is perhaps the most powerful tool for searching.
